Lists used by Sintel BI

You are here:

When you add the Sintel BI app to a site and then provision the app, the provisioning process creates 7 lists in the site that it requires.

Lists Added

  1. SintelBIInstanceConfiguration
Stores application settings including the Infrastructure version and App settings, theme definition and navigation settings.
  2. SintelBIConnectors
stores to connections to the lists used as data sources.
  3. SintelBIDataSources
Contains any data sources that have been defined including their Title and a reference to their connector (from whom they receive their data).
  4. SintelBIComponents
Stores a list of the components including their Title, Identifier (GUID), the Dashboard and the Dashboard version they are linked to, the Data Source they are linked to.
  5. SintelBIDashboards
Stores a list of the dashboards including their Title and their Identifier (GUID).
  6. SintelBIRecycledDashboards
    Stores deleted dashboards.
  7. SintelBISPPrinciples
The users or groups with whom navigation links have been shared.

The first 3 lists inherit the permissions from the site. The remaining 4 lists also inherit the permissions from the site initially but then have the permission inheritance broken such that the visitors group have Edit permissions:

  • SintelBIComponents
  • SintelBIDashboards
  • SintelBIRecycledDashboards
  • SintelBISPPrinciples
The reason the 4 lists require edit permissions is that when sharing a dashboard with a user or group you can choose to grant them view or edit access to the dashboard. If you grant users edit access to a dashboard those users need edit access to these lists in order to edit the dashboard. The changes they make to a dashboard result in updates to list items within these lists hence the need for Edit access to those lists. Sintel do not recommend making changes to the lists or the columns that are created by our Sintel BI app, doing so can break features or lead to unexpected behavior.

Sintel typically add the “Everyone except external users” into the visitors group (taking care not to email them). However, if you have another AD group that you’d like to use (that contains all the users you need) that will also work just fine.

Alternatively, if you want to use another SharePoint group instead of the visitors group to grant users read access to 3 lists and edit access to the 4 lists that require it, that’s no problem. Once you have created the SharePoint group you can grant it read access to 3 lists and edit access to the 4 lists that require it. You can then add AD groups or users into the SharePoint group.
