Dropdown Filter

You are here:

1. What is a Dropdown Filter?

Data Filters can be configured to restrict records visibility based on defined criteria. There are currently three kinds of data filters available on Sintel BI.

Dropdown filters enable you to apply a filter to a column within a list.  For example, on the sample below we have added a dropdown filter to enable the user to filter by a specific department.

2. How to add and configure a dropdown filter.

The following steps explain the data configuration of the date filter:

Please note that for a dropdown filter to work, you will need other components/ charts on your dashboard that use the same data For example in the chart below the data filter affects which departments feedback is shown on the feedback details grid.

Adding the dropdown filter component

  1. Drag and drop the area dropdown filter icon from the toolbox into the design panel.
  2. Resize the widget as required.
  3. Select the dropdown filter you have just added and in the properties section, you can name the filter and change any settings you wish.
  4. You can then select assign data and select your data source.
Please note that before adding a component you will need to define a data source.
  5. You can then select your data source and the column you wish to take the data from (in this case I chose ‘Patient Feedback Details and department). You can then select the components you wish to be influenced by your filtered data.(It is important to remember that the component you wish to be filtered will have to have the same data driving it so that it can actually be filtered by date). The component I chose for this example was the ‘Feedback details‘ grid.
  6. For the default value, you can choose to use any variation of the data. I can select just one department, I can select them all or I could select a combination of a few. When deciding what to set as your default value, you should ask yourself the question ‘who is this dashboard for?’. This will help you to determine what data is relevant.

    Changing the default value

    3. Properties menu options

The following image shows the various properties menu options based on the dropdown filter.

Title – This allows you to set a name for the component

Subtitle – This allows you to set a subtitle for the component.

Description – This allows you to show additional information in the form of a tooltip. It’s beneficial as it gives the user additional information without affecting the visualization.

Icon – Sintel Forms and Sintel BI both have Font Awesome embedded. This enables you to add

Title alignment – This determines the appearance and orientation of the component’s title. You can choose to align your text left, centre or right.

Look & Feel

Elevated Border – You can switch the elevated border on and off of your component depending on what you like best.

Basic Settings

Read-only–  Read-only means that you will make the dropdown filter unalterable therefore a user will only be capable to view data within the default value you have set and they will not be able to see data from outside that.

For example you may set the default value in the ‘Assign data’ section to only show data for the feedback from the Geriatrics department. If you set the filter to ‘Read-only’ you will ensure that those who work in one department are not able to view the feedback related to the other departments.

Once you have added your dropdown filter and assigned data to it, make sure you save your work.
