Data Source Filter
1. What is a Data Source Filter?
A Data Source Filter in Sintel BI allows you to apply filters directly at the data source level. This ensures that only the required data is loaded into the dashboard, improving performance and data security.
This filtering method is recommended for:
- Large datasets, as it reduces the volume of queried data.
- Sensitive data, as it ensures that users only see relevant information before it reaches the dashboard.
2. How to Add and Configure a Data Source Filter
Example: Date Filter
In this scenario, I have a dataset that includes the price of McDonald’s Big Macs around the world and the date when the price was last changed. I only want to display data for countries where prices were updated after 2021.
- Navigate to the Data Source.
- Click on the three dots ‘…’ and select ‘Edit’.
- Select the Filter button.
- Choose Date as the filter field.
- Set the condition to ‘After’.
- Select Specific Date (e.g., 31st January 2021).
- Click Apply.

Example: User Filter
In this scenario, I have a dataset containing travel expenses. I want a dashboard where users only see their own travel requests.
- Navigate to the Data Source.
- Click on the three dots ‘…’ and select ‘Edit’.
- Select the Filter button.
- Choose Requester as the filter field.
- In the second box, type @me.
- Click Apply, then Save & Exit.
Now, when a user logs in, they will only see their submitted requests.
